Western Lakes Cycling Report 24-06-2016

Hi all, there was a load of events last week and more to come.

Leisure Report:

The Cornamona 50Mile Challenge took place last Saturday and it was well attended by WLCC members, they cycled back to event and home after it, so over a 100km cycled in total. Good food stops and event overall.

The Tuesday and Thursday night groups are going well and one of the main events is taking place on Sunday the 26th of June. The Western Lakes cycle is our own event and it will be great for leisure and faster riders. There is two distances 85km and 135km, sign on from 07.30am in Cycling centre. If you not cycling all help would be appreciated.

Race Report.

Plenty of racing took place over the last few weeks, we had the Crit in Claremorris, which had 3 WLCC members take part, Robert Butler won the first Prime and some money, fair play to him. Sean O Malley finished in the group and was in good position throughout the race.

Podium of claremorris crit 2016.

The Connacht Championship took place last weekend. Congrats to Sean O Malley and Shane Gilliagan who picked up medals in the event.

Hard Luck Martin after all the work you put in. Keep it up Martin, the win will come. Shane Gilligan also finished in top ten.

Western Lakes Weekly Report 03-06-2016

Leisure Report

We have beautiful weather at the moment so great times for out on the bike,

The Tuesday evening spins are going from strength to strength. This week it was a 50km hilly spin around the sawmill loop, this is great preparation for longer sportives, like the Pieta House on Sunday or the upcoming Western Lakes Sportive. As you can see by the photo it was well attended and great weather and there is a few budding Chris Frooms or Lizzy Armatage in the making.

cycleways cup 002

The Thursday spins are going well also with several groups on the road, keep it up.

The Tuam Pieta House fund raiser is on this Sunday June the 5th, this is a great local event with great support and refreshments. There is a 45km and 100km route so a route for all WLCC members. Keep an eye on Facebook as a group may cycle from Cornmarket on Sunday morning to Cross. It promised hot so make sure plenty of water and sun cream as you could burn to bits on the bike and not even know it and also heat stroke.

Racing Report

This week saw the second round of the Western/Covey League on the same Srah Loop. It was well attended by both clubs. The top of the table is still John O Halloran but he is surrounded by Covey members, the Covey's are way out in front in the club points so a big turn out is required for the 3rd and final event. This will be a lap of Mauria  Lukes and back, with refreshments and prizes on the night, at least its only one lap.

Please see link to table Western/Covey league table as it stands CoveyWesternLeague2016.xlsx - Sheet1

Best of Luck to Cathal Usher who is taking part in Ras Dun No Ghail over the weekend..

The John Holian Race is on next Friday the 10th of June starting in Cross, a good race for any budding A4 out there..

On the International front the Criterium du Dauphine 2016, starts in France on Saturday, this has many of the top GC riders taken part including, Chris Froome and Alberto Contador, its live on Eurosport

Up-coming cycle events in June-July

Hi all

We have a busy two month ahead as the sportive season and club race season peeks.

I will list and describe a few of the events coming up.

The Tuesday and Thursday Spins continue and these are going very well.

The second round of the Western/Covey League is on Wednesday the 1st of June, it is run on the same Srah course, sign on from 6.15 at Srah school. Race starts at 19.00pm. This has a generous handicap and suitable for all abilities. WLCC need a good show as we trail in the club points.

Western Covey League 1

The Pieta house cycle starts in cross next Sunday the 5th of June. This is a great local event and well supported by WLCC members in the past, it would be great to increase the number with new members from the Tuesday night spins.

Pieta House Cycle Cross

The Mayo league continues in Cong  the 8th of June, this could be a good event for those who have done the Western/Covey league.

The Croi Tour de Lough Corrib Cycle takes place the following Sunday the 12th of June. This events starts in Galway and comes down to Cong, Clonbur and Cornamona, so well used local roads. This is all well attended event by WLCC members.

Tuesday 14th of June all comers cycle in Ballinrobe as part of bike week.

The First round of WLCC league will take place in Hollymount 15th of June, this will be a two lap course to show spectators a sense of the cycle race. This is a inter club league and it will have a generous handicap so novice riders have a opportunity to do well. There will be points for all who attend and points for top 10 and Ladies. It is advised to have a LC licence for this league. Club gear would be great to see on all riders but not mandatory. There will be parking and showers and refreshment available. All new comers welcome to race or be a Marshall on the night.

The Cornamona 50 Mile challenges will take place on Saturday the 18th of June

The Great Lakes Sportive will take place of the  26th of June, this is the Western Lakes own event and all hands to take part and help out would be appreciated.

The Tour De Burren is a great event also

All this leads to the Ring of Kerry 185km Cycle on the 2nd of July.

As you can see there is plenty to do, you could try a long distance sportive or a club race over the summer.

The summer Crituriam race hosted by Western Lakes will be held in Claremorris, this event is an hour of flat out racing around the streets of Claremorris.

Check Facebook and the WLCC website for details closer to the events.
