MTB League

Round 1 of the Connacht MTB Spring league takes place this Sunday

(14th) at Moore Hall.

All the info is on the Connacht MTB League Facebook page. You can also pre-sign on there.

There’s a category to suit everyone from U8 to novices to elites.

The league is going from strength to strength every season with up to

100 children and adults taking part.

Moore Hall is a great trail for beginners as its not too technical and it promises to be a great race. I spent a lot of Friday evenings there last year with the WLCC youths, they are all well able for the trail, and they all enjoyed it!

Sign on is from 9:30 to 10:30 sharp.

Youth races start at 11:20 with junior and adult races starting at 12:05. Distances and entry fee for each category are on the FB page.

Hope to see you there.

BMX Blitz Race Report and Results

Last Friday the 15th saw the first ever Connaught Bmx race take place under the Twin water towers in the Town of Ballinrobe.
With conditions near perfect for a Novembers night, over 30 BMX participants from ages 4 to 40 and from all parts of the Country took to the jumps and berms of the Western Lakes Cycling club track. Special mention to Gary Davoren who now holds the time for the fastest lap at 51.3 seconds.
Sincere Thanks to all who helped on the night especially to all the stewarts, time keepers, Jeff on Music, Order of Malta and to Breege for the catering.
The event was a great success and fun and craic was had by all. Watch out for the next one which promises to be bigger and better. The track is open every friday night if anyone is interested in giving it a go.

Cyclo Cross event for Ballinrobe.

For the first time in years Western Lakes CC in conjunction with Connacht cycling are going to hold 3 cyclo cross events in the Mayo Galway region.

Cyclo cross is a form of bike racing performed on a short off road lap with grass, trails, forest and roadway thrown in so that the competitor has to have their wits about them at all times. The best competitor has to be strong and skilled and be able to run over hurdles.

Cyclo cross picture

The aim for year one is to make the routes less technical so that competitors foster a love for this type of racing,  Leinster and Ulster cyclo cross forms a strong part of their riders preparation for the road season, developing technical skills, aerobic and anaerobic conditioning and strong pedalling technique..

A racing bike with plenty clearness around the front and rear forks and rough tyres is the preferred race bike but a Mountain or hybrid bike can also be used.

Cyclo cross is a great spectator friendly sport and one is sure to always see a spill or two.
