Paidi O Brien Kanturk may not have raced at the Ballinrobe 2 day before but he certainly left his mark in 2014. Damien Shaw in 2010 took the Yellow jersey and points but Paidi went one better, taking all 3 jerseys and a stage win plus bringing home 3 perpetual trophies the Eileen Marrey memorial trophy for overall, the Kieran Mc Mahon cup for the points sprints jersey and the Martin Munroe Memorial cup for Stage 1 victory, some haul for the Kanturk man.
Damien Shaw Aquablue led after he 4.7k hill climb something he probably he didn’t want as he didn’t have the support of the usually strong Aquablue outfit with manager Timmy Barry at the helm. Eoin Morton UCD lying 2nd overall going into the last stage did the unthinkable by attacking from the gun, he held a lead of up to 45 secs at one stage with Tony Bourke Galway Bay for company.
On the first climb of the day at 20k Shaw lead the chase hauling in Morton before Paidi scooped the points, shortly after Paidi and Paddy Clarke attached the bunch bringing Anthony Walsh UCD, Sean Mc Kenna Fixx Roulers, and O Brien’s teamate Cashman of Osbourne Meats with them. For Miles it looked like Shaw was playing the waiting game before he pounced but with Morton the every Loyal teammate tracking the Aqublue man the break of 5 looked like the winning move.
After 101kms indeed it was with Anthony Walsh UCD who took a fine victory and the Garhill cup from Paidi O Brien Ashbourne Meats, 2nd Sean Mc Kenna Fixx Roulers 3rd. Paddy Clarke Fit Science Ballina put in a stomping ride as he moved on to the podium for 3rd overall finishing 4th on the stage. There was some great racing in the A2 and A3 category and it goes to prove that if you don’t put yourself out there you will never win, Daire Freely continued his great season winning the A3 jersey with Keith Finn Lakeside wheelers Mullingar taking home the A2 jersey.
