Dr Whyte out sprints Hughes in Western Covey league
Nearly 50 riders turned up in Ballinrobe for round 2 of the League, on a cold wet and very windy evening it was great to see so many eager bodies.
The handicap system catered for 4 different groups so all abilities had a chance of competing, with 12 minutes seperating the front group from the scratch men over the 49km circuit.
With 5k to go the strong scratch men finally reeled in all the front runners, lots of small breaks and attacks came to nought against the strong head wind and it looked like all was set for a bunch gallop but Padraic Hughes WLCC and Dr Ollie Whyte Cw had other ideas when they jumped clear with 1km to go, with both clubs represented no one took up the chance with the duo opening up a 100m gap, in the gallop for the line a fast finishing Ger Corcoran nearly caught their tail coats but it wasnt to be when Ollie Whyte opened up the throttle to take his fisrt road win of the year. Olllie now goies into Rd 3 as league leader and will wear the leader's yellow jersey.
Padraic Hughes who has been very consistent in all the races thus far is showing good promise as he up grades to A3, the big win is only around the corner.
With rider and road safety paramount, all racers are aked to heed the organisers re the rules of the road and the competition, if crashes continue to happen both clubs will be left with no choice but to disband the league.
In the Team section Western Lakes aggressive racing has them at 428pts to Covies 416pts.
In the ladies league Siobhan O Malley leads from Ann Marie Egan with Kathleen Barry in third.
The Handicap group has been up dated for Rd3.
