Sean O Malley wins the Loughrea GP
Western Lakes CC could not have started the racing season any better with Sean O Malley winning the the A4 race in a tight sprint from 2 Westport covies Tom Burke and James Mc Greevey. With 90 riders starting the A4 race this was a massive achievement for Sean.
Sean O Malley and his 3 team mates Padraic Hughes, Shane Giligan and David Mac Dermott made all the right moves early on covering all the breaks and staying in contention, on the climb after 20k the bunch split up where Sean was again to the fore winning the sprint to the top of the climb.
On one of the descents Shane Gilligan was involved in a bad smash when hitting the ground at speed (rumours had it that he was trying to wipe on the bunch were all proved un founded ).
Padraic Hughes made a bid for glory attacking with 1km to go, had no luck but helped Sean instead as he kick started the attacks to the line, on the long drag to the chequred flag Sean had a half a bike to spare over Tom Burke of Westport making it a clean sweep for the Mayo men.
In the A1,A2,A3 race Western lakes CC had 8 starters with Donal Harrington, Michael Gilvarry, Michael Moran, Gert Hack, Mark Kelly, Kieran Heneghan (all A3), Mark Quigley and JJ Flaherty (A2)
With the A3 getting a handicap on the A1, A2 bunch it took the latter 50k to come to grips with the A3's. Alot of attacks helped to break up the bunch when eventually a 7 man group escaped the cluthes of the group, unfortunally none of the WLCC men making it, but all were happy enough to finish in the bunch not far behind the break on a tough season opener over 90k.
Next weekend the squad travels to Navan.
